Security precautions are one of the primary reasons for placing sensitive data in a data center such as those utilized by Vault Networks. Placing data in these safe havens in the physical world are common requirements for various regulations such as PCI, so in many cases it is a requirement rather than a nice thing to have available. But there is a lot more to the security benefits of colocation than placing data in a different building that happens to host your business.
The Vault Networks data centers are accessible 24x7x365, and during that timeframe that covers every day of the year, a security team is on-site to ensure that nothing happens to your data. In addition to the security team, access to the data center is restricted only to customers and employees who have access to the floor in question – if you don’t have the card key and authorization, you can’t get to the floor. Of course, without the card key and being able to pass a biometric hand scan, you can’t get into the data center anyway.
Once you are inside the data center there are still additional defenses in place. Each customer rack is sealed with a lock and key, and you can’t access the space where our customer racks are located unless you have the code to access the gated area. In addition to the locks and precautions in place to prevent unauthorized access, the whole area is covered with CCTV surveillance cameras that are running 24×7, with all footage archived for future retrieval in the event that it is needed.
In addition to the threats of a malicious person attempting to either steal or sabotage your equipment, the data center also has precautions in place in the event of a more accidental issue such as a fire inside a customer’s rack. The data center has 24×7 monitoring of environmental systems to maintain 72 degrees Fahrenheit, and in the event that there is a fire, the fire suppression system is there to take care of it. The system is set up with the piping system set up to check for fire through a small burnable piece of the pipe. Once a fire burns through that piping, the sprinkler in that section activates to suppress the fire – and in that section alone. This way if there is a fire on the opposite side of the data center due to a customer issue – perhaps a faulty power supply, for example – only that section of the data center will be impacted. Your equipment will continue to run uninterrupted by the issue.
Finally, for cyber threats, Vault Networks offers a few packages to assist you in setting up a firewall solution. The first option is to use a firewall connection provided by Vault Networks to allow access to a set number of firewall rules, enabling you to pick and choose specific IPs to either allow or block access to your infrastructure. For companies that require a more advanced firewall solution, Vault Networks can work with our vendors to get competitive pricing on an enterprise-quality firewall from Fortinet. If you have experience with a specific firewall provider and would prefer that brand please let us know and we will check to determine if we can source that specific brand as well.
